Key Events from 1989

From the railway archiveThe SUNDAY TIMES publishes the proposals of the new Central Railway Group who intend to build a new high-speed railway line linking the north of England with France via the Channel Tunnel. A large part of the proposed route follows the old London Extension trackbed for many miles south of Leicester.
From the railway archiveA splinter group of the Main Line Steam Trust is established to pursue the plans to acquire the section of the old London Extension between Loughborough and Ruddington. This section of the line is still in use by British Rail, being used to bring supplies to the MOD depot at Ruddington and the gypsum works at Gotham. The new group is named the Great Central Railway Northern Development Association.
