Key Events from 1923

From the railway archiveThe start of the year sees the nation's 123 independent railway companies are are amalgamated into four 'super' railway companies. These were the Great Western Railway, the London & North Eastern Railway, the London, Midland & Scottish Railway and the Southern Railway, and these became known as the Big Four. The Great Central was absorbed into the London & North Eastern Railway, or LNER as it was known.
