Key Events from 1899 |
 | On the 9th March, amidst great ceremony at the newly erected Marylebone Station in London, the Great Central Railway London Extension is officially opened. This opening took the form of a special train for the Directors only, followed by a lavish meal at the station where the main concourse and platform area was turned into a dining area for the occasion. Colourful flags and banners were draped from the roof and many of the diners actually ate in their top hats. A series of presentations followed, and then the Rt. Hon C. T. Ritchie pulled a simple silver lever on the platform which admitted steam to an awaiting locomotive's cylinders - and the train left to the sound of cheers and celebration. |
 | Public passenger services on the London Extension begin on 15th March. In spite of heavy publicity, the first three trains only carried four, fourteen and thirty-four passengers respectively. |
