Radio Station Aerial, Trafford Park

Radio Station Aerial, Trafford Park

T1475. The aerial seen here was erected as part of cutting edge research undertaken at Metropolitan-Vickers in the 1920s, when the Company's research department set up an experimental radio station. Radio at the time was a new medium. Experiments by the the Company's American contacts encouraged the British firm into the field. A studio was set up in the research building, a conference room being made sound proof with the use of a marquee-like structure. An aerial was hung between the water tower and the top of the building. The first experimental broadcast took place on 17 May 1922 and the station carried on broadcasting from Trafford Park until 1923, becoming known as ''2ZY'.
