Printout from Bridging the Years:

Trafford Road Swing Bridge from Trafford Wharf

Trafford Road Swing Bridge from Trafford Wharf

T1456. The construction of the Manchester Ship Canal opened the way for large sea vessels to sail into Manchester. Such vessels required clear passage along the Canal, and so various methods were employed to allow for their height. Several swing bridges were constructed along the length, including the Trafford Road Swing Bridge, pictured here being used by a large crowd, who appear to be watching the rowers in the foreground.
