Navvies at work on a culvert near Godington

L2904. Bridge construction near Godington, Oxfordshire, circa 1897. This structure would have required at least two spans - one for the stream and one for the narrow lane that lies between the abutments. As the picture demonstrates, many so-called navvies were capable with far more than simply pick and shovel: skilled bricklayers made one of the most valuable contributions to the railway's construction.
