Printout from The Last Main Line:

Former Leicester Central locomotive shed.

Former Leicester Central locomotive shed.

L1860. A broad shot of the combined water tower and coaling stage at Leicester Central Shed looking south-east. Locomotives could enter the structure from either end - water was provided from the tank on top of the building, while coal was loaded from the platform inside. The small building to the right of the coaling stage contained the sand drying ovens. The coaling stage was affectionately know by the enginemen as 'Hungry Hill'. The GCR main line ran in the distance, just this side of the houses in the background.
