Temporary support girders for the M1 railway bridge near Whetstone.

L3501. When the M1 motorway was built in the early 1960's, the path of the new road severed the Great Central Railway's London Extension at a point midway between Whetstone and Cosby. To take the railway over the new highway, the M1 contractors built a new girder bridge, but this had to be done with little disruption to the railway services. The way around the problem was to build the girder bridge on temporary steel trestles, close the railway for four days, and slide the new bridge into place. This photograph shows the temporary trestles built to take the weight of the new girder bridge on the site of what is now the M1.
