Bridge construction on the Great Western & Great Central Joint Line, Saunderton, Buckinghamshire

L1799. A fascinating photograph taken during the construction of the Great Western & Great Central Joint Line near Saunderton, Buckinghamshire. The scheme involved widening the old Great Western Railway, seen here on the right of the picture, to accommodate an extra main line track, and rather than build another bridge from scratch, the engineers have decided to increase the span of the existing structure. Note the five navvies posing for Newton's camera by the temporary wooden bridge. Mackay & Davies of Cardiff built this section of the Joint Line (High Wycombe to Princes Risborough).
