Steam shovel, navvies and tipping wagons at a cutting near Birstall, Leicester

L1552. Steam shovel and navvies at work in a cutting near Birstall, Leicester, circa 1897. Teams of navvies would later reduce the steep sides of the cutting created by the steam shovel to a safer and shallower angle. The letters 'HL' can be seen on the tipping wagon nearest the camera, presumably for the initials of Henry Lovatt, the contractor who built this section of the Railway (Contract No.2, Leake to Aylestone).
