Bridge construction at the site of Belgrave and Birstall Station, Leicester

L1543. Construction work in progress on the site of Belgrave and Birstall Station, Leicester, circa 1897. When laid, the permanent way would run either side of the 'island platform', a design synonymous with the London Extension. The slabs at the centre of the photograph are platform edging stones. Henry Lovatt of Wolverhampton was the contractor responsible for building this section of the Railway (Contract No.2, Leake to Aylestone).
