Printout from The Last Main Line:

MS & L Railway 'Telegraph Department' van

MS & L Railway 'Telegraph Department' van

L1513. As the permanent way was laid along the London Extension, the Manchester, Sheffield & Lincolnshire Railway's Telegraph Department installed the familiar lineside telegraph poles and signal wires along the length of the line. They would travel in their own departmental wagons and vans - one of the latter being shown here coupled to another MSLR wagon. The simple box van is lettered 'M S & L', 'LONDON EXTENSION' and 'TELEGRAPH' on the left, with the number '16213' and 'SHUNT WITH CARE' on the right. The vans frames are marked '7-03' followed by a star, the '16213' again. In the foreground of the picture is some very lightly laid contractor's rails on split log sleepers. The image was taken at Shawell in Leicestershire.
