Mansfield Road Tunnel, Nottingham

Mansfield Road Tunnel, Nottingham

L1398. The south portal of Mansfield Road Tunnel from the site of Nottingham Victoria Station. Trains coming into Nottingham from the north would enter this 1,200 yard long tunnel and travel beneath the city - emerging at here Victoria Station. The tunnel and track looks ready to receive trains and the site looks almost complete. The photograph was taken just short of the platforms and the two tracks featured would have run through the centre of the cavernous station. Victoria North signal box would eventually be built immediately on the right of the photograph. Note the date stone above the portal proclaiming that the bridge was completed in 1896 by Logan & Hemingway.
