L1057. Manning Wardle & Co. 'M' class 0-6-0 contractors' saddletank locomotive, CICETER, No. 583 of 1876, seen with her crew and a gang of navvies. According to the notes of S. W. A. Newton, the photograph was taken at Helmdon yard, Northamptonshire, circa 1897. The engine and navvies are pictured at work on Contract No. 5 (Woodford to Brackley) built by Walter Scott & Co. of Newcastle-upon-Tyne. The engine's cab appears to be a 'home made' modification, designed to increase the comfort of the locomotive's crew. | |
