L1203. Early stages of the construction of Contract No. 7 (Canfield Place to Marylebone) being built by J. T. Firbank of London Bridge. The work was carried between 1894 and 1898, dating this photograph at about 1896. The photograph was taken near Wellington Road in St. Johns Wood, and shows a narrow excavated cutting with a contractor's railway laid within it. A Temporary wooden bridge straddles the cutting with a derrick standing on it. A small gang of navvies are at work with shovels in the cutting. Note the gas light in the left of the picture.
