| T2594. This medal was produced to mark celebrations which took place on the passing of the Manchester Ship Canal Act in 1885. On hearing the news that the Act had been successful various celebrations took place. One event was a trades procession involving the trades societies in Manchester. Representatives of the different trades carried standards symbolising their skills, such as a suit of armour for the tinplate workers. This procession took place on October 3rd 1885. The same date is inscribed on this medal, suggesting its production was linked to this particular event. The front of the medal is a bust of Daniel Adamson, the first Chairman of the Manchester Ship Canal Company. The reverse features a steamship in full sail and is inscribed 'Manchester Ship Canal Demonstration. Oct 3rd 1885'. The medal's blue silk ribbon in printed in gold with the words 'Manchester Ship Canal Demonstration 1885'. | |
