Commemorative Plate Marking Passing of Manchester Ship Canal Act in August 1885

Back to table of results
T2584. This plate was produced as part of a great celebration in Eccles, which took place to mark the passing of the Manchester Ship Canal Act in August 1885. The Act was finally passed on its third attempt to the jubilation of the Canal's backers and local residents. At the 'demonstration' an ox was roasted and portions of meat were distributed to the local residents on plates like this one. Daniel Adamson, the first Chairman of the Ship Canal Company, was present, and the plate is decorated with his image.
