T1380. A book written and produced by Kellogg's to celebrate 50 years at Trafford Park states that barges delivered three and a quarter million tons of grain into the factory. This was reckoned to be around forty thousand barge loads over a period of 36 years. The reason for the closure of this service was the ever increasing size of the vessels used in transporting the grain from around the world. The larger sizes meant they could not navigate the Manchester Ship Canal. A new facility was finally built at Seaforth to handle the larger vessels.
